Crispy Chilli Potato Recipe – A Spicy Indo-Chinese Delight

Chilli Potato is a popular Indo-Chinese appetizer that has become a favorite in Indian households, especially among street food lovers. It combines the crispy texture of fried potato fingers with a spicy, tangy, and slightly sweet sauce, creating a perfect fusion dish that is loved by both kids and adults. Whether you’re looking for a tasty evening snack or a party starter, this recipe is sure to impress.

📝 Ingredients

For Frying Potatoes:

  • 3 large potatoes (peeled and cut into thin fingers)
  • 4 tbsp cornflour
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (maida)
  • ½ tsp black pepper powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as required
  • Oil for deep frying

For the Sauce:

  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tbsp finely chopped garlic
  • 1 tbsp finely chopped ginger
  • 2 green chilies (slit or chopped)
  • 1 small onion (sliced)
  • 1 small capsicum (sliced)
  • 2 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • 1 tbsp red chili sauce
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp vinegar
  • ½ tsp sugar (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp spring onion greens (for garnish)
  • Cornflour slurry (1 tsp cornflour mixed in 2 tbsp water – optional for thickening)

👩‍🍳 How to Make Chilli Potato

Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes

  1. Wash and peel the potatoes. Cut them into finger-length sticks.
  2. Soak them in cold water for 15-20 minutes to remove excess starch, then drain and pat dry.

Step 2: Coat and Fry

  1. In a bowl, mix cornflour, all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, and a little water to make a semi-thick batter.
  2. Add the potato fingers and coat them well.
  3. Heat oil in a deep pan and fry the potatoes on medium flame until golden and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Step 3: Make the Sauce

  1. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a wok or pan. Add chopped garlic, ginger, and green chilies. Sauté for a few seconds.
  2. Add sliced onion and capsicum. Stir-fry on high heat for 1-2 minutes.
  3. Now add tomato ketchup, chili sauce, soy sauce, vinegar, salt, and sugar. Mix well.
  4. (Optional) Add cornflour slurry to slightly thicken the sauce.
  5. Toss in the fried potatoes and mix well to coat evenly in the sauce.

Step 4: Garnish and Serve

  1. Sprinkle spring onion greens on top.
  2. Serve hot as an appetizer or snack.
